Now that you cannot dm infrastructure nodes I think we need a way to easily test connections to distant infrastructure nodes without using up airtime for a trace route. I propose a simple "ping" packet that sends a ping to the node and the recipient sends back a "pong". Other metadata could be added like how many hops there and back and signal metrics of the last node that got it to the recipient.

Does this not essentially exist already when you send /ping on a broadcast channel?
