Briefly proposed within the discussion of issue #251 , a new term 'nationality category data item' (and any necessary axiom-supporting classes) is proffered here.
Project Relevance:
APRICOT Project; ongoing canonicalization, concretization of entities relevant for modeling social determinants of health (SDOH) and related medical/health/patient data
Use-case Support:
Common question topic and answer data item among SDOH survey instruments. Additionally, these data have established relevance to other important patient information, including but not limited to insurance coverage, inferred healthcare access [current and historically], inferred minimum travel history, and inferred access to social/socio-economic/community support networks, all of which are commonly assessed by SDOH survey and patient data collection instruments.
It should be noted that some instruments are designed to approach this information indirectly through inquiring about, e.g., "country of origin/birth" paired with "[current] country of residence". It is likely that forms like this are implemented in clinical settings in attempt to avoid direct inquisition of citizenship status (is thought to foster a "safe space" for all patients, regardless of "legal status"). In contrast, instruments like the US Census/ACS require citizenship status; from the ACS:
Where was this person born?
Is this person a citizen of the United States?
When did this person come to live in the United States? If this person came to live in the United States more than once, print latest year.
Assessment of Published Classes Outside of OMRSE as of Today, 5 March 2025:
only GSSO contains classes using the term "nationality" or "citizenship", and upon cursory inspection, all of which are inappropriate for OMRSE and have little to no relevance to "data items", "data fields", or "data (general)".
NCIT possesses the class "National Origin", but, again, label is unsuitable for specified use-case.
