Short story is:

• as far as I know, air does not have an R package with bindings, which tergo has. They both have a vs code extension and they both have a CLI tool
• in terms of formatting choices - they are pretty similar with tergo being very slightly more open to configuration. Very slightly
• in terms of being ready to use - tergo still has some parsing edge cases in it that are not yet fixed: see Panics and crashes #48. For 99.9% of your code, it will be fine.

All in all - I use tergo for my own setup and I don't have any problems. air is much more than just a formatter though - it's supposed to be a full R language server, whilst tergo is strictly a formatter.

posit (the org behind air) comes from US, if you care about such things in the current political climate (I do).

I would love for someone to add tergo to nvim as well. I know air has been added to conform.nvim, but I don't currently have the bandwidth to do the same :(

I am also super open to contributions and help from other developers. I would absolutely love for tergo to take off and be a truly open source (not only source-disclosed) alternative to styleR, air and others. It's built on strong fundamentals and my dream is it will harbour a small community of devs because I cannot compete with posit employees who can work on air full time on my own. I do have a day job and tergo is something I work on during my free time :(
