TestReporter doesn't seemed working in maven surefire plugin 3.5.3

I've attempted to use TestReporter like documented

    @Test
    void reportSingleValue(TestReporter testReporter) {
        testReporter.publishEntry("a status message");
    }

However, the outputs do not appear in the result xml files nor in the logged output.txt files.
This seemed to be a hit-and-miss as I've seen it worked in another maven project with the same surefire plugin

my POM declarations are like such

is there something that might be missing or any configurations needed to get TestReporter to work correctly?

That XML file is written by Surefire and currently does not include report entries. Please raise an issue with the Surefire project and ask them to add support for that.

The Open Test Reporting format (see User Guide) does support report entries but your downstream tools may not yet be able to process it as it's relatively new.

hi @marcphilipp thank you very much for your response, I'm still hitting various bummers after I tried some options e.g. that Open Test Reporting, for some unknown reason, open-test-report.xml didn't get generated after configuring based on the guide.
No worries for now, I'd try to figure out some stuff along the way.
in the meantime, apparently java.util.logging works with maven surefire plugin, and I'm using that for the time being.
