GeoKit not rendering distances correctly

Geokit doesn't seem to be rendering distances correctly. During our acceptance test we found that geokit seems to estimate much larger distances between points than we measured on our own. I'm wondering if there might be any ideas about this.

The Geokit distance_to method has an :formula argument that allows the 2 different values :sphere and :flat (:sphere is the default). Maybe changing this would help?

How far off is what you measured from what Geokit calculated?

I could also imagine the Geokit/Ruby is not using all the decimal digits available for the distance clalculations.
