It would be nice to have an optional setting for running ffmpeg compression and OCR only when the computer is plugged in. I figure most uses involve looking at data from a while ago anyways so the user would likely have plugged in since then

Currently this would involve changing our strategy relatively significantly and would require benchmarks to ensure that writing images to disk rather than to ram and then compressing does reduce energy usage. I'm guessing it would, but don't know for sure.
OCR on the other hand could be performed post-compression, but benchmarks would need to be performed to understand if it takes an accuracy hit.
If we did start writing images to disk, you could just OCR later.
