Limitations

Koko edited this page Mar 25, 2024 · 65 revisions

The translator can't do the following:

  • Translate English into Toki Pona. Here's why.
  • Translate possibly lexicalized compounds such as translating "tomo tawa" into "vehicle".
  • Translate Tokiponized proper words into Untokiponized words such as translating "Manka" into "Minecraft".

The following are unrecognized by the translator. ✏️ means it is a limitation due to being work in progress and it will be lifted soon.

  • ✏️ Whole sentences, the translator can only translate phrases
  • ✏️ "a" particle
  • ✏️ "pu" content word
  • ✏️ "X ala X" constructions
  • Multiple sentences (At most 2 sentences are allowed) Here's why
  • Non-pu vocabulary ("tonsi" is recognized)
  • Non-widespread Toki Pona additions or "nasin"
  • Quotation (Support for quotation is limited)
  • Preverb with modifiers other than "ala"
  • Preposition with modifiers other than "ala"
  • Clause* with both "li" and "o"
  • "kepeken" as headword or modifier
  • "taso" as headword (it can be used as modifier)
  • "anu" as content word
  • Multiple "pi"

There are even more pedantic limitations listed in the source code: src/filter.ts. Some of the limitations might be lifted later.

*Clause refers to the whole sentence or part of sentence found before and after the "la" particle.

Recognized Comma Placement

Commas in following placements are recognized by the translator. If placed elsewhere, the translator will ouput an error.

  • In place of period
  • Before "en"
  • Before "li"
  • After "o" vocative like in "jan Koko o, mi wile moku" (This is technically considered 2 sentences); Without comma, it'll be treated as imperative sentence
  • Before "o" imperative predicate like in "jan Koko o pona, o musi"
  • Before "e"
  • Before "anu"
  • Before prepositions
  • Before or after "la"
  • After "taso"
