This project will no longer compile with the package.json file as is and npm update/npm audit fix does not address vulnerabilities.

What worked for me is that I ran the following command:
npm install --save react react-dom
It should update your React and React DOM files from the outdated version.
You could also run npm install to install any dependencies that your project will need
