Images in grid are offset downwards at certain grid sizes

With some grid sizes, each image in the grid will be offset downwards compared to the previous image.

In most cases, the bugged sizes include 2, 3, 6, 11, 17, 18, 22, and 26 (I didn't test every size beyond this). However, after testing across various sets of images, some of them are not bugged with all of these same sizes. With these uniform colored squares, 17 is no issue, but the included pictures of Miku shift downwards. The squares are still bugged with a size of 22. I was unable to find a convincing explanation for what exactly causes this.

Tested with timg 1.6.3-2 in kitty 0.45.0.

The images can only start at character locations, and when an image is printed, the cursor has to move up again to show the next in a grid. That can only be controlled with character coarseness.

To make that work, timg asks the terminal to report the size of a character cell in pixels, so that it knows give a particular image size how many vertical characters it covered, so that it then can 'jump up' again to start a new image.

Some terminals can't report the size of the character cell correctly, sometimes because there are fonts with fractional pixel sizes, or they try to 'stretch' the space between characters to nicely fill out the given screen size. Unfortunately, most terminals use aliased fonts these days which render ok, but make the definitive character-cell reporting harder: These cell sizes that can be queried are only integer sizes.

Typically that works well, for some fonts, terminal sizes etc. not.

If you add --verbose to your timg call, you can see the character cell size it has determined:

To fix, maybe you have to play with a different font. Sometimes it is already sufficient to resize the terminal a little bit if kitty attempts to evenly space out characters on the screen (not sure if it does, but some terminals do).

Note that kitty absolutely does not do any such tricks and its reported cell size is always pixel perfect.
