The HA OS is mostly read-only. It's difficult to create any custom service which runs directly on the HA OS. Addons running inside containers lack access to the OS. Permissions assigned to addons don't help either since they're still very restricted.
An option to have additional systemd services would be very useful. The alternatives are to run HA core instead or to run a custom build of HA OS.
Maintaining custom builds of HA OS with minor adjustments and upgrading from one such build to another would be too much work. There's not much infrastructure around that.
Running HA core might be the best option if custom services aren't desirable on the HA OS. This also makes it easy to use custom kernels.
