I wonder whether, following the soulutf8 merger, it is feasible to also integrate approaches that allow to use soul with XeTeX or LuaTeX, i.e., the approach the xesoul provides (or something more clever that does not require to adapt the \SOUL@tt font), and maybe lua-ul for LuaTeX, which probably just could be loaded with the soul option \ifluatex.
