Centroids

Could someone please clarify the use of a centroid? I am trying to calculate the distance from a geographical area to the city centre; for example, the distance between the centre of New York and Texas. I am unsure as to whether this would be the most effective and clean way of calculating distances between two places. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
