Remove edge_starts

@AboudyKreidieh I've temporarily assigned you to this but that's mostly to loop you into the discussion. We have all these specify_edge_starts methods but they don't seem to be used for anything significant anymore, and they're confusing when you're implementing a new scenario. Thoughts on just deleting them?
