Superimpose a grid layout

I'm not sure how do-able this would be but perhaps overlaying a grid over the page to help positioning. Just thinking in terms of when you design in applications like GIMP/Photoshop.

Could even go down the router of "snap to grid" so you do not need to be so precise.

Any thoughts?
