Computing environment

P0 Essential D1 Guided

The reference environment is CPython 3.12 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS using CPU execution. macOS and Windows through WSL are supported, but a GPU is never required for Essential (P0) or Core (P1) work.

Download and extract

Click the green Download bundle button in the top navigation, or use Downloads and releases. Extract the ZIP into a new folder. Keep its directory structure: notebooks use the data supplied beside them.

Install CPython 3.12 and uv, and use a Jupyter-compatible editor. Open a terminal in the extracted folder, where pyproject.toml and uv.lock are located. Git, Node.js and npm are not needed for student setup.

Install the Python environment

uv sync --locked
uv run python -c "import numpy, pandas; print(numpy.__version__, pandas.__version__)"

Run the first notebook

Open the extracted folder in your Jupyter-compatible editor and select its .venv Python 3.12 environment as the notebook kernel. Open notebooks/foundations/python-pandas.ipynb, restart the kernel and run all cells in order. Keep the notebook in the extracted folder so it can find the bundled data.

Record the command output and any errors for the readiness check. If setup fails, use the static first Python–pandas page in class and bring the error message to the instructor for support.

Git and project conventions are introduced through the project starter. Course authors who need to rebuild this website can follow the repository README.

Reproducibility rule

A result is complete only when it can be regenerated from the recorded bundle using pinned dependencies, checksum-verified data and a fresh kernel. Saved output alone does not show that a notebook will run again correctly.
