New optimism node syncing very slow #263

Bug Description
We started running a new optimism mainnet node (2 days ago) using the latest main version from: https://github.com/smartcontracts/simple-optimism-node and the mainnet-2024-01-26.tar.zst archive snapshot, but our node is syncing very very slow (between 1900 and 2500 blocks per hour), apart from that we see some strange errors on the op-node logs

Steps to Reproduce

Setup a new node following the step on this tutorial: https://docs.optimism.io/builders/node-operators/tutorials/node-from-docker
After configuring the .env, downloading an uncompressing the snapshot in the correct folder and starting the services with docker compose up -d --build
Wait for a few hours and observe the syncing speed

Expected behavior
We expect the node to be syncing faster in order to be able to reach the tip of the chain.

This seems a bit strange to me, op-geth is still inserting new blocks, this timeout may be sporadic

The timeouts seem to be consistent, like failing some of the first attempts.

Hey @darkxeno, sorry I didn't see this earlier in our issues. Can you provide your machine specs? Our first thought is op-geth doesn't have enough resources. Given its an archive node, it takes a lot of resources.

Its an gcp e2-standard-4 instance, so 4 cores 16GB of RAM, most of the resources are unused (screenshot)

Any new information here? I've been having this issue more often recently.
VM has 16 CPUs but op-geth only uses ~1 core and we have trouble keeping up with the OP Mainnet.

i got the same problem, sometimes the node can't stay live because it's very slow ( archive mode 12 core 32 ram ), this is my config:

If you use docker to run them, you may need to expose some related ports to support op-node p2p and op-geth p2p

Ports are already defined:

  - ${PORT__OP_GETH_P2P:-39393}:${PORT__OP_GETH_P2P:-39393}/udp
  - ${PORT__OP_GETH_P2P:-39393}:${PORT__OP_GETH_P2P:-39393}/tcp

  - ${PORT__OP_NODE_P2P:-9003}:9003/udp
  - ${PORT__OP_NODE_P2P:-9003}:9003/tcp

we are only discussing the fact that it is very slow at syncing, and often comes back online,but other times there are slowdowns again, the usage of the machine is normal, both cpu/ram and disk

unfortunately these problems have been there for months, even on Base it does the same thing, not even talking about op-reth which stucks directly in the fourth step of recovery from a clean node on mainnet
