All notable changes to Dungeon Scoundrel will be documented in this file.
The format is based on Keep a Changelog, and this project adheres to Semantic Versioning.
- reCAPTCHA v3 site key configured — every Firebase load now initializes App Check and attests requests. Enforcement stays OFF in the console until the App Check metrics show verified traffic (enforcing early would reject players still on cached old versions).
- Firebase App Check pre-wired (anti-abuse, next real security step):
firebase-auth.jsinitializes reCAPTCHA v3 App Check whenwindow.__appcheck_site_key(insrc/config/firebase-config.js) is non-empty — empty means fully off, the game runs unchanged. Enabling it is now: register in Firebase Console, paste one string, deploy, watch metrics, then enforce. CSP extended forwww.google.com(reCAPTCHA script + frame);/src/config/*gets a must-revalidate cache rule (it is unversioned — a pasted key must reach players immediately). - All 15 Classic events rewritten in the Adventure voice (audit: "placeholder-grade next to the polished Adventure writing" — "Maybe next time!" era). Intros and dismissal lines only; every mechanical choice/effect untouched.
- Elites fight one wave longer — the relic reward finally has an attrition price (was only +0.25 depth scaling).
- Cursed-chest odds deepen with the acts: 30% / 45% / 60% (was a flat 35%) — deep treasure is a real gamble now. Adventure intro copy updated.
- Shift+1..5 holds a card — Hold was pointer-only (right-click / long-press).
- All 15 static modals announce as dialogs (
role="dialog" aria-modal="true").
tests/unit.mjs— table-driven tests for the pure game math (ascension effects, seeded RNG determinism, shop pricing), wired into the smoke CI workflow. Its first run caught a real latent bug:- Removed the broken default export in
game-constants.js— it referencedEVENTS/RELICS/ACHIEVEMENTSthat don't exist in the file and only evaluated in the browser by accident (game-data.js defines them as window globals first; in Node it threw). Nothing imported it.
- Ascension ladder (A1-A10): win an Adventure run at your highest level to unlock the next. Each level stacks one modifier onto the existing knobs — A1 bosses +15% HP, A2 faster depth scaling, A3 merchant prices +20%, A4 -2 max HP, A5 meaner elites, A6 weaker campfires, A7 -25% monster gold, A8 fiercer horde regroups, A9 potions heal 1 less, A10 the final boss awakens (+20% HP, +2 strike). Score earns +10% per level. Selector appears in the Adventure new-game modal once unlocked; an "A" chip shows in the HUD during the run. Daily Challenge is always A0 (comparable board), and the leaderboard payload is unchanged (Firestore field whitelist stays valid).
- Per-act backdrops (Gemini art, style-anchored to the base dungeon): descending into Act 2 floods the screen with The Sunken Halls (drowned teal vaults) and Act 3 with The Black Heart (ember-cracked obsidian). 34KB + 17KB, idle-prefetched with the rest of the run art.
- 9-check ascension suite (selector gating, modifier math at A5, boss HP scaling, act backdrop classes, victory unlock A5->A6, Daily forced to A0), full smoke, boss suite, daily determinism — all green.
- The game now actually plays offline. The service worker precaches the whole versioned app shell (38 JS/CSS URLs, generated per release by the bump script) — the old SW cached only "/", so offline the shell loaded and every script 404'd. Verified headlessly: install SW, kill the network, reload, start a run and play a room.
- Classic events are keyboard-operable — choices were mouse-only divs; a keyboard player who triggered an event was soft-locked (draw/avoid disabled under the modal). Now real buttons with a visible focus ring.
- Every modal returns focus to whatever opened it (screen-reader/keyboard users landed on the page body after closing anything). Implemented once inside trapFocus via a class/DOM observer — no per-modal wiring.
- Menu no longer scrolls into the game screen — the v1.7.4 mobile block overrode the game wrapper's hidden state (display cascade bug), rendering the board underneath the welcome screen.
- Card art restored on phones — an old mobile "optimization" injected
.card { background-image: none !important }at <=768px, erasing ALL Adventure card illustrations (from when art was 115KB/card; it is ~34KB and idle-prefetched now).
- Real JS/CSS minification on Netlify (
scripts/minify.mjs, esbuild): 686KB -> 405KB (-41%) inside the build container; repo keeps readable sources. Whitespace+syntax only — identifiers are never renamed (the window.* contract and hand-maintained load order stay untouched). Replaces the deprecated[build.processing]no-op (production verifiably shipped unminified code). Full smoke + boss suites pass ON the minified output.
User-reported: cards the wrong size, screen shifting, unpleasant play on phones. Root causes fixed (portrait <=600px):
- Toasts no longer resize the board — the message area was in-flow on mobile (every toast pushed score/weapon/controls/cards down); now a fixed overlay, layout never moves.
- Cards size to the viewport (clamp 72-96px): a 4-card room always fits one row on any phone; 5-card boss waves wrap into a second row instead of being clipped by the old fixed 160px bottom bar.
- One simple scrollable column — no fixed-positioned panels fighting each other; compact top bar (volume slider hidden), compact score/controls; the room pins to the bottom for thumb reach.
- Every first-party JS/CSS URL is now version-addressed — including the ES-module import specifiers and stylesheet links that were unversioned — so /src/* is served immutable again. Repeat visits stop paying ~30 conditional-GET round-trips (the interim must-revalidate cost from v1.7.0's correctness fix) while keeping the guarantee that every release reaches every player atomically.
- New scripts/bump-asset-version.mjs (run per release, reads package.json version): rewrites the whole URL graph and fails if any relative import is left unversioned — a missed one would load a second instance of a module (split-brain game state).
- The whole run is seeded now, not just the map. Deck shuffles, card draws, gold rolls, crits, event/treasure/curse outcomes and relic-choice pools all consume one seeded run-RNG stream on Daily runs (
seedRunRng/runRand, XOR-decorrelated from the map's LCG stream). Same day + same class + same choices ⇒ identical game for every player — the daily board now ranks decisions, not luck. Verified: two independent browsers produce byte-identical decks, maps and RNG streams; Classic stays truly random. - Cosmetic rolls (particles, death-narrative picks) deliberately do NOT consume the seeded stream, so visual state can't desync gameplay between players.
- Also: the game is now playable on mobile (beta) — the waitlist hard-gate became a dismissible notice with a primary Play Now button (QA'd headlessly at 390×844: zero errors, zero horizontal overflow).
From the full-site audit (5 parallel deep reviews + live production verification):
- Unguarded
JSON.parsein gameplay handlers (6 sites): a corruptscoundrel_lifetime_statskey threw mid-card-resolution (after room state had already mutated), wedging the run — and production error-suppression hid it. All sites now route through the guardedwindow.storage.update. - Bug reports arrived blind: production suppresses all console/window errors into an in-memory log nothing read. The last 10 suppressed errors now ship with every bug report.
- Dead relics revived: Bandage healed 0 HP all run (
floor(0.5)per room — fraction now accumulates across rooms); Speed Boots only fired at Classic minibosses (now +1 card in every normal room draw, both modes); Bell was purely cosmetic (now also +2 gold per room). Copy synced: Herb says "per room" (matching code), Master Smith discloses its hidden +1 weapon damage. - Dead code: removed
goldRush/luckyCharmgold multipliers that read unlock keys which have never existed (the comment claimed "already implemented!"). - Adventure watchdog interval now cleared on game end (ran forever at 1.5s).
- Boss regroup chip damage escalates +50% per extra wave (cap 2× strike): a potion-rich deck out-healed the flat chip, so stalling the boss had no clock — and score counts kills+gold, so free waves were a leaderboard farm.
- Hard-mode economy softened one lever: boss gold 15-25 → 18-28, room-clear 2-4 → 3-5. Hard stacked three penalties at once (tougher enemies, ~half income, same prices).
- EmailJS CDN script pinned to
@4.4.1with SRIintegrity+crossorigin(was a floating@4tag — silent supply-chain exposure). - Headers:
frame-ancestors 'self'added to CSP; explicitStrict-Transport-SecuritywithincludeSubDomains; manifest cache rule fixed to targetsite.webmanifest(pointed at a nonexistentmanifest.json). - Toast cap: at most 3 concurrent messages (combat bursts flooded the screen and the
aria-livequeue). - Social preview:
og-image957KB PNG → 73KB JPEG; removed 251KB unreferencedtitle-logo-readme.pngfrom the deploy.
- Boss entourage: Adventure bosses no longer fight alone. Entering a boss node deals 3 cards from your persistent run deck alongside the boss, and whenever only the boss remains alive the horde regroups with a fresh wave — so weapons and potions keep cycling into the fight. Arriving weaponless is now a desperate dig for a blade instead of a guaranteed death spiral.
- Regroup pressure: each wave after the first costs chip damage (half the boss's strike) — it puts a clock on digging for a weapon and stops the endless deck recycle from becoming a free score/gold farm (score counts kills + gold).
- Capped bare-hand strikes: a boss's
numValueis an HP pool (26–46); it was also used as the damage for a weaponless click — an instant, unfair death. Bosses now carry a cappedstrike(act 1: 10, act 2: 12, finale: 14). Classic bosses are untouched. - Rusted-blade failsafe: if the run deck has been stripped of every weapon (culls, sales), a 4♦ blade is dealt into the wave — the fight is always winnable in principle.
- Victory sweep: when the boss falls, surviving entourage cards return to the run deck (they're the player's persistent cards) and the encounter clears into the usual reward flow. Potion-per-room limit resets per wave, matching multi-hand combat.
- Art re-mastered to display size: all 39 Adventure card illustrations were shipped at 537×760 (~115KB each) but render at ≤120×170 CSS px. Re-encoded at 360×510: 4.4MB → ~1.3MB (−70%), visually identical at 2× DPR (verified side-by-side). Hero avatars (832–1536px → 360px) and the dungeon background (LCP preload, 119KB → 67KB) likewise.
- Adventure art pre-warms at run start (idle-time
Image()prefetch, skipped on Save-Data) so card reveals don't pop in one by one mid-fight. - Service worker now caches
/assets/(cache-first; URLs are content-addressed with?v=) — repeat visits render card art instantly and offline.
/src/js/*and/src/styles/*were servedmax-age=31536000, immutable, but ES-module imports (game.js→modules/*.js) and every stylesheet<link>are unversioned URLs — returning players could keep stale modules/CSS for up to a year after a release, mixed with fresh?v=-busted top-level scripts. Nowmax-age=0, must-revalidate(cheap parallel 304s)./assets/*stays immutable.
- Netlify
[build.processing]minification does not apply to deploy previews, so preview Lighthouse flags unminified JS/CSS; production behavior to be verified before adding a build step (see BACKLOG). - Known limitation (unchanged): Phoenix Feather does not trigger on boss-strike/regroup chip deaths; Firestore still trusts client-submitted score/time.
- Daily Challenge: one shared, seeded Adventure descent per UTC day (locked to Normal for comparable scores), started from its own main-menu button. Scores go to a dedicated Daily leaderboard tab stamped with the day and seed. Same class ⇒ identical map for every player that day (card draws still vary).
- 📊 Stats tab in the Codex: the lifetime stats that always fed unlock gates are finally shown to the player — career, per-mode/difficulty wins, combat and economy totals.
- Discovery-gated Codex: relics show as "?" until you've held one in a run (recorded automatically at render time, so every acquisition path counts). Rarity headers show found/total.
- Escape-key soft-locks (critical): Escape closed the first active overlay in DOM order and just hid it. In Adventure this could dismiss the map (the run's only hub) or the map behind the first-run intro, stranding the run; it could also dismiss the game-over screen in both modes. Escape now targets the visually-topmost overlay and honors per-overlay semantics (
data-esc); every Adventure overlay's close path returns to the map, and a recovery watchdog reopens the map if all overlays ever vanish. - Second-run soft-lock (critical):
finalBossSpawnedwas never reset, so the second Classic run in a session could never spawn the Dungeon Lord — unwinnable at deck end. Undo state and the previous run's relics (which inflated the new deck's special count) are now reset too. - Victory gates: Evading past the last card granted a full-score victory without the final boss; death no longer falls through into final-boss spawning; a lethal blow on an Adventure encounter-clearing kill now registers as a death instead of advancing waves over the corpse.
- Undo integrity (Easy/Normal): snapshots now deep-copy cards and capture stats — boss HP no longer survives an undo (free boss kills), and kill→undo loops no longer inflate score/lifetime stats.
- Boss combat: one-shot buffs (Power, Berserk, Shadow Strike, Rage Strike) are consumed on boss hits — they used to multiply every boss hit and persist after the fight. Defeated Adventure bosses no longer recycle into the run deck (infinite boss-gold farm); depth scaling no longer compounds on deck recycles.
- Dead relics revived: Bronze Ring / Combat Study (+1 damage) and Healing Charm (+1 potion heal) did literally nothing — their effect types were never queried. Crown now doubles gold-per-room relics as described. Once-per-room relics (Cloak/Stone/Mirror Shard/Gauntlet) now recharge after Adventure encounters. Herb is reflected in potion tooltips/previews.
- Portal event heal clamped; Shrine/Library relic grants count toward the Priest unlock; tutorial ✕ no longer permanently disables the game buttons.
- Pick-1-of-3 relic rewards (Adventure): elite/boss kills and uncursed treasure offer a choice of three relics — the genre's build-identity moment. Events/cursed chests/Mystery Relic stay single-outcome bets by design.
- Death run recap: "Slain by a 10♠ monster… You fell in Act 2 — The Sunken Halls, 5 rows deep."
- HUD chips for combo and Adventure wave progress (both drive damage math but only appeared as fading toasts); curse cards now render with a violet border + ☠️ badge; relic sidebar shows rarity colors; Adventure reward moments have sound.
- First automated test:
tests/smoke.mjs+ GitHub Action drives menu → new game → first action in both modes, zero page errors required.
- Class selection, top-bar chips and the version badge are keyboard-operable; focus traps on the new-game/class/map modals;
aria-livecombat announcements;role="dialog"on all modals;prefers-reduced-motionsupport; 44px close buttons; AA contrast for achievement requirements; legible map tooltips; tap-to-preview map nodes on touch.
- New
game-economy.js: one pricing/purchase core for the Classic shop and Adventure merchant (discount relics now work at the merchant — they silently didn't);GOLD.SHOP_PRICE_MULTIPLIERfinally consumed by its shop; thegamestate literal now declares every live field; dead writes removed. - Six hero motivations rewritten as six distinct voices, single-sourced from
data/adventures.jsinto the class-select screen; the Dungeon Lord gets a real flavor line, announcement and ending beat; relic copy dedup/tightening; Rules Reference dedup; "Speedrunner" tier/title collision fixed; "Genocide" retitled.
- Procedural map (3 acts, branching, always completable): node types Battle / Elite / Event / Merchant / Campfire / Treasure / Boss / Final Boss, with hover tooltips and a current‑position marker.
- Illustrated deck — 31 hand‑inked card illustrations; type read instantly via coloured border + glyph.
- Difficulty = waves per encounter (Easy 1 · Normal 2 · Hard 3) plus depth scaling.
- Deck‑building — persistent run deck; campfire heal or cull; map merchant to buy/remove/sharpen cards and relics.
- Risk/reward depth — choice‑driven events, cursed chests (curse cards injected into the deck), relic rewards from elites/treasure/bosses.
- Per‑class endgame — unique motivation, final boss and ending for each of the 6 heroes (
data/adventures.js). - 8 boss portraits (6 per‑class finales + 2 act guardians) and 51 illustrated relic icons, all generated offline by the new
tools/AI art pipeline (keys env‑only, never shipped).
- Mode‑aware achievements (per mode × difficulty, speedrun, clear‑every‑hero) — 58 total.
- Dual leaderboards (Classic / Adventure), sortable by Top Score or Fastest clear.
- Adventure first‑run tutorial (distinct from Classic's interactive tutorial); updated Rules Reference for both modes.
- Mode‑state leak (critical):
adventureRunand the corner merchant / Enter‑Chamber / Evade buttons weren't reset, breaking Classic after any Adventure run. Now reset onstartGame. - Adventure boss exploit (critical): a boss could be "cleared" with no weapon (free relic + run victory). Boss now stays and deals damage until you fight it properly.
- Cross‑mode parity: fixed a stale
StorageCachedesync that broke 7 generic achievements in both modes; Adventure now tracks events/shops/buys (Priest + shopper/event_master reachable in Adventure). - Security/robustness: escaped Google
displayNamein the sign‑in toast; fixedjoinWaitlistFirefox crash; normalized the leaderboard name write; madetrapFocusidempotent; guarded module‑loadJSON.parse. - UI: clamped Adventure card‑art filenames to the range that exists (no 404s on sharpened weapons / depth‑scaled monsters).
- Extracted the in‑game tutorial to
modules/in-game-tutorial.js(game.js −438 lines; SFX already ingame-sounds.js). - Extracted the most‑repeated inline styles into utility classes.
- Critical CSS: Inline styles for faster First Contentful Paint
- Deferred Scripts: All non-critical JS now uses defer attribute
- Preconnects: Added preconnect for CDN resources
- Auto Minification: Netlify now minifies JS/CSS/images automatically
- Removed Duplicates: Cleaned up duplicate meta tags and preconnects
