Do we still need Child portal Folders?

When you create a child-portal, (actually named directory in the PB, quite confusing)

DNN still creates a sub-folder in the root with a redirect file in it.

I remember these redirects were needed before the current URL rewriter.
But I wondered if we still need them?
FYI, when I delete the folder, the child portal works as expected.

I believe we don't need them for sites using all of the new config, but older sites that are on older URL rewriters do still need them.

Hmm, right. So maybe we could check the used re-writer?
Although that would could be an issue when "switching back".. Question is would anyone do that?
