For Task 13 (Smart Home and IoT Layer), we need to decide which smart home protocol to prioritize for the initial NEXUS integration with Home Assistant.

The main contenders are:

1. Yes, Zigbee should be the default. The cost advantage is decisive — sensors from AliExpress at $5–8 each vs $20–40 for Z-Wave equivalents makes it the only realistic recommendation for most NEXUS users. Sonoff ZBDongle-P as the recommended coordinator is a solid, well-supported choice and costs under $20. Home Assistant's ZHA integration handles it natively with zero extra config.
2. Absolutely yes. Pre-configured ESPHome templates in the NEXUS CodeSpace is one of the highest-value features we can ship for the smart home layer. Users should be able to pick a device type (motion sensor, relay, temperature probe), select their ESP32/ESP8266 board, and flash directly from the browser — no local Python environment needed. Tasmota is worth including as a secondary option for users who already have Tasmota devices, but ESPHome should be the default since it integrates more cleanly with Home Assistant and the YAML config is more readable for non-developers.
3. Z-Wave should be treated as an advanced optional module, not a default. The hardware cost alone disqualifies it for most of our target users. That said, it is worth supporting cleanly for the Business and Enterprise tiers — Z-Wave's reliability on 900MHz makes it the right call for commercial deployments where Wi-Fi congestion is a real concern (offices, retail, multi-unit buildings). The implementation path is straightforward: Z-Wave JS UI runs in Docker and pairs with Home Assistant the same way ZHA does, so the integration cost is low once the optional module exists.
