I’d like to request a new page for the website – an Accessibility Statement page available at https://www.djangoproject.com/accessibility/.

This feels important to me so we can express our commitment to accessibility, in a format and at a place that people unfamiliar with Django will understand. See for example the diversity statement.

As far as content – here are recommendations from W3C.

For reference, we’re also making progress on accessibility guidelines for contributors. I expect the information on this new statement page will similar, just written for a different audience.

Tasks

  • First draft
  • Accessibility team review
  • Board + Steering Council review
  • Final draft
  • More reviews
  • Publish as flatpage
  • Convert the statement to a view and templates
  • Add a link from the footer

Thought I should also add we’ve already been recommended to build this as a template within the project’s code. @sabderemane has offered to investigate how to do this.

This came up again, looks like it’s time to do a first draft? Who wants to give it a go @django/accessibility? I have done a few so happy to go for it but I’m equally happy if others want to try it out.

  • Torchbox accessibility policy. This is for a for-profit business so starts with a broad statement of intention but then also covers more contractual aspects of accessibility which might not be as relevant for the Django Software Foundation.
  • The Wagtail accessibility landing page is for an open source project but more marketing-focused than what we need here. However I do have past versions of it that are more focused on the statement of intention with less hyperbole.

@django/steering-council @django/dsf-board Our final draft of the accessibility statement is now ready for review. Could you take a look and let us know what you think / any feedback?

Once we have the feedback we’ll move on to publication, either with flat pages or a view with templates.

Thank you all! I’ll proceed with publication, tentatively over the weekend. If anyone still wants to review / feedback, please do go for it here or on the doc

@erosselli just announced this at DjangoCon Europe 🫶, the statement is now live: Django accessibility statement.

Feedback very welcome! I’ll keep this issue open so we:

  1. Convert the statement to a view and templates
  2. Add a link from the footer

Marking as a "good first issue" + "help needed" – we could use someone taking over to do the above two remaining tasks.

And it’s now announced: Our new accessibility statement 🌈 And I’ve created a new forum thread for public feedback. Thank you all for the help with this :)
