This is a common-ish element. Should consider whether to check whitespace errors when it exists.

This should be very similar to throws and returns except it's always "ignored" in preferences, so it's actually simpler. Although some plumbing is needed in each level. I think this also put a bunch of repeating code into the count of 3, which probably calls for some refactorino.
