For some cases, it could be useful to process the file before downloading :

Compress a big file to save bandwidth
Uncompress a .gz file
Convert a file from a format to another one (ex : csv / xlsx / odt - word / md / txt / html - png / svg / pdf)
Download a subset of a file
Image resizing
...
