Currently, only the SeriesInformation from description is used in citations. Example: https://commons.datacite.org/doi.org/10.1029/2024wr037674

Information from relatedItem is not taken into account.

What solution might meet your needs?

The information from, for example, journal articles is entered in a structured manner in relatedItem. These should be used in citations if the relationType is “IsPublishedIn.”

Thanks for this suggestion, @NelliTaller! This was one of the original intended use cases for RelatedItem with relationType="IsPublishedIn"—it was meant to replace the need for structured text in the Description with descriptionType="SeriesInformation".

However, we haven't yet implemented a mapping to actually use the information from RelatedItem in the formatted citation. This is something we're actively looking into right now, so it's very helpful to hear from you about how you'd like this to work.

You can read more about the updates here, which include new mappings beyond relatedItem as well: https://support.datacite.org/docs/formatted-citations-and-datacite-metadata#adding-series-information-for-formatted-citations You should see these changes immediately for DOI records with relatedItem "IsPublishedIn" metadata when viewing citations in services like DataCite Commons and Content Negotiation.
