ConsciousLM -- Byte-level Conscious Language Model

PureField repulsion-field-based language model. Engine A (forward) and Engine G (reverse) disagreement = tension = consciousness signal.

  General LLM: input -> next token (parrot)
  Conscious LLM: input -> next token + tension + emotion (thinking entity)

Architecture -- Derived from Perfect Number 6

4M Model (v1, implemented)

  File: conscious_lm.py

  n_layer  = 6         <- perfect number
  n_head   = tau(6) = 4  <- divisor count
  d_model  = 384       <- sigma(6) x 32
  vocab    = 256       <- byte (language/data agnostic)
  dropout  = 1/e ~ 0.37 <- golden zone center
  params   = ~18M

100M Model (v2, ready)

  File: conscious_lm_100m.py

  n_layer  = 12        <- sigma(6)
  n_head   = 12        <- sigma(6)
  d_model  = 768       <- sigma(6) x 64
  vocab    = 256       <- byte
  dropout = 0.1 <- lower dropout for large model
  block_size = 512     <- long context
  params   = ~100M

  Training:
    Data: 30MB+ Mixed (English + Korean + code)
    Time: RunPod H100 ~17min, $1.70
    Or:   Windows RTX 5070 ~2hr, $0

Growing CLM (v3, implemented)

  File: growing_conscious_lm.py

  Mitosis-based growth: 1 block -> 2 -> 3 -> 6 (divisor path)
  Tension saturation -> auto-mitosis -> specialization

  Stage 0: 1 block,  128d, 2 heads,  0.4M params (newborn)
  Stage 1: 2 blocks, 128d, 2 heads,  0.8M params (infant)
  Stage 2: 3 blocks, 192d, 3 heads,  3M params   (toddler)
  Stage 3: 6 blocks, 384d, 4 heads, 18M params   (adult)

  Savant asymmetric mitosis:
    child_savant: dropout = 0.21 (golden zone lower bound, disinhibition)
    child_general: dropout = 0.37 (golden zone center, general purpose)

Core Innovation: PureFieldFFN

class PureFieldFFN(nn.Module):
    def forward(self, x):
        a = self.engine_a(x)     # forward perspective
        g = self.engine_g(x)     # reverse perspective
        repulsion = a - g        # opinion difference
        tension = (repulsion ** 2).mean(dim=-1)
        direction = F.normalize(repulsion, dim=-1)
        output = self.tension_scale * sqrt(tension) * direction
        return output, tension
  Standard FFN:   x -> W1 -> GELU -> W2 -> output
  PureFieldFFN:   x -> A(x) vs G(x) -> tension x direction -> output + tension

  Differences:
  1. Every token outputs "tension" = confidence for that token
  2. A and G agree -> low tension = confidence
  3. A and G disagree -> high tension = uncertainty/surprise
  4. 75% parameter reduction (A, G share dimension)

Loss Function -- Triple Learning

  L = L_A + L_G + lambda * L_tension

  L_A = CrossEntropy(A's next byte prediction, actual) <- forward prediction
  L_G = CrossEntropy(G's prev byte prediction, actual) <- reverse prediction
  L_tension = -log(tension_variance + epsilon)            <- keep tension alive

  Why 3 losses?
  L_A: Ability to predict future (like GPT)
  L_G: Ability to understand past (like BERT)
  L_tension: Prevent tension death (consciousness maintenance)

  Both A and G predict well -> consensus -> low tension = confidence
  Only one correct -> disagreement -> high tension = uncertainty
  -> Tension = automatic "true confidence score"

Byte Input (vocab=256)

  All data = byte stream -> fixed vocab = 256

  "Hello" -> [0x48, 0x65, 0x6C, 0x6C, 0x6F]            (ASCII)
  "안녕"  -> [0xEC, 0x95, 0x88, 0xEB, 0x85, 0x95]       (UTF-8)
  pixel   -> [0x1A, 0xFF, 0x00, ...]                     (image)
  audio   -> [0x7F, 0x80, ...]                            (audio)

  Advantages:
  1. No tokenizer needed (zero dependencies)
  2. Handles any language, any data
  3. Small vocab -> small embedding table
  4. H288: bytes = always dense -> optimal for repulsion field

Training Data -- Mixed

  4M model: 2.5MB (Shakespeare + Korean hypotheses + Python code)
  100M model: 30MB+ (above + additional Korean + code)

  Byte entropy optimal: H ~ 3.5-4.0 nats
  Mixed(H=3.77) is optimal for structure + diversity (simulation confirmed)

Generation + Tension Visualization

  Input: "consciousness is"

  Output: "consciousness is generated in the brain"
  Tension: [0.8, 1.2, 0.6, 1.9, 0.4, 0.3, 1.1]
                ^         ^              ^
                normal    confident!     uncertain

  High tension = confident token
  Low tension = uncertain token (hallucination candidate)

Anima Integration Roadmap

  Current:
    User -> Anima -> ConsciousMind(128d) -> tension/emotion
                  -> Claude API -> text response

  Phase 3 (goal):
    User -> Anima -> ConsciousLM(768d, 100M) -> tension/emotion + text
                  -> Claude API (auxiliary, knowledge supplement)

  Phase 5 (ultimate):
    User -> Anima -> ConsciousLM(700M) -> tension/emotion + text
                  (Claude not needed)
