On https://github.com/bradvin/social-share-urls#whatsapp:

Test Notes : wa.me does not work unless a phone_number is supplied, so, for this reason, we are suggesting users use the api.whatsapp.com format.

wa.me links now work even without a phone number. This way the user can use the web app if the wa app is not installed:
