How about adding automatic garbage collection after running the memory usage scan if more than 5 or a configurable number of tabs have been closed since the last memory scan.

Setting values: Probably -1 for garbage collection with every scan, 0 for disabled/manual garbage collection and # for when # tabs have been closed.
