What is the motivation for requiring authentication?

This specification is relatively old compared with some of the newer approaches. For example, BRC-101 (now implemented in the latest Discovery Services) supports plain HTTPS. Alternatively, it can handle BRC-103 authentication over BRC-104, with or without BRC-105 payments.
