If you've ever stared at an OpenAI pricing page wondering whether that reasoning model is actually worth it, or if you should just route your workload through a cheaper provider — this post is for you.
I built llm-prices: a zero-dependency Python CLI that lets you query, compare, and calculate LLM API costs across 238 models from 35 providers. In this post I'll share the most interesting data I've found, and show you how to use the tool in your own workflows.
Here's the number that stopped me cold when I first compiled the data:
The cheapest input pricing is $0.02/Mtok (Nebius, Llama 3.1 8B). The most expensive is $150/Mtok (OpenAI, o1-pro). That's a 7,500× spread.
For a practical workload — 10,000 input tokens and 2,000 output tokens — the cheapest option costs $0.000320 (Nebius Llama 3.1 8B) and the most expensive costs $2.70 (o1-pro). That's an 8,438× difference in total cost for the exact same token count.

deepseek-r1-together Together $3.0000 $7.0000 512kLambda AI has the cheapest DeepSeek-R1-0528 at $0.20/$0.60. Hyperbolic is interesting for output-heavy workloads: it uses flat $0.25/$0.25 regardless of input/output ratio — unusual in the industry.
The Crusoe and Together pricing ($3/$7) is 15× the Lambda price for the same model. Always worth checking.
A few things have changed dramatically since 2025:
OpenAI's gpt-5-nano (part of the GPT-5 family) comes in at $0.05 input / $0.40 output — making it competitive with dedicated cheap models. The GPT-5 family now spans from $0.05 to $30/Mtok input.
OpenAI's o3 reasoning model dropped from ~$10/$40 to $2/$8 per Mtok in April 2025 — a 5× price cut that made advanced reasoning dramatically more accessible.
Moonshot AI's Kimi K2 is a notable 2026 entrant: a large MoE model at $0.60 input / $2.50 output with a 262k context window in thinking mode. It's available through Moonshot directly, Hyperbolic, and Crusoe.
Anthropic's Claude 4 family is notably cheaper than Claude 3 Opus was:
claude-opus-4-7: $5/$25 (vs. Claude 3 Opus at $15/$75 — a 3× reduction)claude-sonnet-4-6: $3/$15 (unchanged from Sonnet 3.5)claude-haiku-4-5: $1/$5 (slightly higher than Haiku 3)- 1M token context on all Claude 4 models
xAI quietly introduced grok-4-1-fast — a cheaper tier of their Grok-4.1 model
at $0.20 input / $0.50 output with a 2M context window. That's 6× cheaper than
the flagship grok-4.3 ($1.25/$2.50). For agentic workloads that need long context
but can use a lighter model, it's worth benchmarking.
Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash has a 2,097k token context window — the largest in the dataset — at $0.15 input / $2.50 output. For document-heavy workflows that need massive context, it's hard to beat:

Liquid AI (lfm-2-24b): $0.03/$0.12 per Mtok. MIT spinout (2023) building "Liquid Foundation Models" — a non-transformer architecture based on dynamical systems theory. One of the cheapest capable models in the dataset. Available via OpenRouter.
Inception AI (mercury-2): $0.25/$0.75 per Mtok. Uses a diffusion-based approach to language modeling rather than autoregressive next-token prediction. Founded 2024. This challenges the assumption that all LLMs must use the same architecture.
Writer (palmyra-x5): $0.60/$6.00 per Mtok with 1M+ token context window. Enterprise AI platform tuned for writing workflows, with deep document handling via RAG.
Also in v0.1.38: Qwen3.5 (including the 397B MoE flagship), Qwen3.6 (new generation, 1M context Flash tier), MiniMax M1 (1M context at $0.40/$2.20), and Gemini 3.5 Flash from Google I/O 2026 ($0.75/$4.50, thinking tokens included).
Since v0.1.21, llm-prices ships with a built-in MCP server — so you can query pricing data directly from Claude Desktop, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible AI assistant, without leaving your conversation.

Once configured, you can ask your AI assistant directly: "What's the cheapest model for 100k input tokens?" or "How much would it cost to run 50k tokens on GPT-4o vs. Claude Sonnet?" — and get a live answer from the embedded pricing data.
The data lives in a single Python file — easy to add new providers or update prices. PRs welcome.
Current coverage: 238 models, 35 providers — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, DeepSeek, Groq, xAI, Qwen, Baidu, Liquid AI, Inception AI, Writer, MiniMax, ZhipuAI, ByteDance, IBM, NVIDIA, and more.
