Omarchy gave life to old pc from 2008

I have an old pc from 2008(yes, that old) that was grinding to a halt using windows 10 and I was about to throw it away/recycle it.

I installed omarchy on it and it is usable! Well, hyperland can't run on its old gpu(it has an onboard ancient video card) but, no worries for me, because x.org server with xfce work just fine and all the other applications omarchy installed by default are available in desktop mode.

I really liked the default neovim and mise setup from omarchy. I can't believe that this old pc boots us in less than a minute (it has the old classic hard drive) and windows 10 was making it unusable. Installed rails, and elixir and I am doing embedded development with elixir nerves. Just amazing that I could use this to do development on a pc that I was about to throw away. Well, just my thoughts...

Hey, mate. I know this is kinda random, but I actually have an old device I'm trying to install Omarchy on as a replacement. If you don't mind, can you explain how did you get the x.org server with xfce to work with Omarchy? Since Omarchy uses hyprland by default and Wayland too. Did you uninstall hyprland first?

Of course. I will reply once I get home. It's really easy. You just do simple commands like pacman -S xorg or something like that and then you disable hyperland from starting by commenting out some commands in the home directory. I will post details later on.

Ok. On old ancient computers like mine, the gpu can not support gsl shaders and all the nifty things hyprland requires. So most likely after setup, while trying to boot hyprland, you will get a blank screen.

Press ctrl-alt-f1 or f2 or f3 to get login prompt.

Login as the default user omarchy created for you or the one you let omarchy create for you. Login in and go the /home/your_user_name/.config/hyprland/autostart.conf and comment all entries. Save the file and reboot. Now you should get the classic login prompt with no graphics.

Then, login again and do
pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xnit to install the xorg-server.

Then you do pacman -S xfce4 xfce4-goodies to install xfce.

In your home directory create a file .xinitrc, open it and enter:

exec /usr/bin/startxfce4.

Save the file and then at the prompt type:

startx

and you should see xfce boot. That's all. Hope it works for you
