I'd love to write some tests for the spacer functionality so that it's easier to merge PRs and make improvements.

I'm not exactly sure what these tests would look like, so folks who know something about how this might work (testing this type of functionality within a vscode extension), please chime in!

Having tests would be super helpful and give me a lot more confidence when making changes.
