Maybe it's more or less perfect and the XBee API protocol hasn't changed even on newer parts? (I sort of doubt either of those things.) Is there a recommended alternative?

@egnor - just in case you come back here. For me the protocol is stable, even the new XB3 use the 64bit frame types, so in terms of the basic frame support they haven't changed.
