Hello,
I have an AAG cloudwatcher that apparently has Indi support - I have not tried it with indi-allsky, but based on the driver they have it seems like it would work without much issue.

Is there a way to work the values it collects into the all sky cam interface? I was also thinking, since it is relatively accurate, it might be an interesting way to train ML for cloud detection as well - since I could capture photos, and a log of the AAG output, those would both be good inputs into a machine learning model for using the cam to detect clouds.

I apologize for not getting to this sooner. Currently, I do not have a way to log data from another INDI device like this, but it is interesting to me. I have seen the hooks in INDI for SQM-type devices, but since I do not have one, I do not really have a good feel for how they work.

It would be possible to export the values to a file so they could be displayed in the image labels/overlay. I would just need to see the output of indi_getprop with the device connected to see what values are available.

Let me see if I can figure out how to do that - I literally have no idea on a pi :) I was actually not 100% sure that indilib was actually affiliated with Indi at all.

If I built all indi, i should have the driver for the cloudwatch I would think. I'll fire it up and look.

If you have any tips on getting the output i would like to have them. I'm using a FTDI usb ot serial converter to connect to the AAg so should be supported in linux.

You can just update the indiserver that indi-allsky configures and use it from there.

Edit ~/.config/systemd/user/indiserver.service and add indi-aagcloudwatcher to the indiserver command (along with the other servers that are already there). Then reload the systemd config and restart indiserver.

systemctl --user daemon-reload

systemctl --user restart indiserver

Once you have the indiserver running with the indi-aagcloudwatcher server, you can connect to the indiserver from Kstars/EKOS and then you can use the indi_getprop command to dump the values. You can also just manually run the indiserver with kstars and then run indi_getprop, you just have to "Connect" the device before dumping the values.

What is the format of that file? I tried adding a new service, it would not start, I added a new execstart, indiserver complained that there can only be one, if i append the "/usr/local/bin/indiserver -p 6969 indi_aagcloudwatcher_ng" to the end of the existing telescope sim with or without a comma separating them, it fails and stop after 10 retries.

Googling that file I find... Nothing of course. Indi does not seem very well documented. I did find in the indo folder there is a aagcloudwatcher_test_ng which might be a AAG sim or test device.

Also if I tried to spin up the driver from the command line I get a binding error , I am assuming it is complaining about the port but no matter what port I specify it complains.

This looks like it might have started the aag driver but not the telescope driver.

I have Kstar installed on my mac where i have done some python development, mostly with Onstep to control the telescope. I used tried the script here

But of course it needed a huge amount of changes and then failed anyway b/c the init thread method is apparently deprecated.

In kstars i can fire up a local instance of the AAG and also a server, I'm not sure how to scrip at it though.

I could also connect stars to the remote server, and go verify the readings changing and all that. I’ll see if the windows client can connect to the India’s server in the morning

I have not forgotten, I have just not had time to look at it. I am thinking about writing a separate python service to write the weather station values to a file which can be ingested by indi-allsky.

I know I'm late to this discussion, but I've got an AAG Cloudwatcher too, and I took an entirely different approach - I just put a job in cron to go fetch the data every 1 minute from the Cloudwatcher API, create a file with the info formatted nicely, and then include that file in via the "Extra Image Text File" in Image config.

My crontab entry looks like:

* * * * * /home/YOUR_USER_HERE/cwstats

If you're not familiar, you can get the line into cron with the command crontab -e

I've attached the script which does the fetching and formatting (changed to *.txt): cwstats.txt

Good idea. I might extend this, there are two cases, one, writing out the file in the exact cloud watcher format would let you use the all sky as a “master” for your mounts. Also, writing out the other file for the ascome safety monitor would let you close your dome or whatever when the AAG detects clouds. I think the ascom safety monitor is just the boltwood file which is just a “safe” or “unsafe” or something similar.

Would someone be willing to give me remote SSH access to one of their systems with the AAG connected where I could connect via an indiserver?

I could write a python script to access the data via indi, but without an actual device, I could never truly debug it to make sure it works correctly.
