+ This study provides an in-depth analysis of the trends, patterns, and correlation with some indicators that might be associated with gun violence and specifically, shooting incidents, + which have been a persistent problem in the city. The research is based on extensive data collection from NYC Open Data, together with statistical and visual analysis learned trhough the Social Data Analysis and Visualization course, + which reveal important insights into the nature and extent of gun incidents in the city. The findings of the study have important implications for those who seek to address this pressing public safety issue. +

According to our studies, in the period from 2006 to 2019 there was a remarkable decrease in shootings as it can be seen in Figure 1, with a clear negative trend. Although, data starts from 2006, this decrease of incidents follows a much longer historical trend, from their highest peaks during the 80s and 90s; mainly due to the big efforts of the City to contain the situation. On the other hand, the proportion of fatalities has been overall constant, with an average of 20%.

Only after we investigated a bit more, we discovered that most of the shootings were located in housing alocations. Primarily, public housing, but also private and other premises. This plays a big role as shooting in public places, such as commercial buildings, food venues, or others, tend to have a wider impact on terrifying the society.

However, it can be seen that during the last 3 years, things have gone backwards in the Big Apple, as more shootings have been recorded; as an example, 2020 has duplicated its shootings comparing to its previous year. We found this unexpected, as this was the year were most people were at home in lockdown.

With this analysis we wanted to escape the obvious about more general categories, such as gender, age, race, etcetera, and we aim to find "hidden" or not so visible consequences of these types of incidents.

In order to analyse the consequences of these crimes, we looked at what were the most relevant socioeconomical associated to shootings. To this end, we made an extensive exploration on the data source page to look for possible aspects. Consequently, we have picked a few topics which could be associated to shooting incidents in our opinion.

Firstly, we observed what is the impact on school attendance. Then, we analysed the role that shooting incidents play in the construction investments. Lastly, we also considered the impact on bike usage, although this time, we couldn’t find any association between them, as you can see in the explanatory notebook.

Impact on school attendance

The first thing that came to our minds is that gun violence and shootings could have a significant impact on school attendance. When incidents occur in the vicinity of schools or within the community, parents may be hesitant to send their children to school out of concern for their safety. In some cases, schools may be closed or placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, further disrupting students' attendance and academic progress. + +Additionally, students who are exposed to or directly affected by gun violence may experience trauma, anxiety, and fear, which can affect their ability to attend school and concentrate on their studies.[5]

We have created a variable -z-score- which allows us to identify when the attendance for a certain school was extraordinarily affected (the lower, the more unusual the attendance drop). Figure 3 shows the correlation between z-score and number of shootings in the same day as the shooting, while Figure 4, the attendance impact on the next working day. Logically, all weekend and other non-school days have been excluded in the analysis.

Construction development information was provided by the following dataset where it is possible to access all job construction applications within NYC. We made a grid in the latitudes and longitude of 1x1 kiliometer to analyze the truth of it. Figure 5 on the right shows the correlation between total construction investment in the 1sqkm cell grid versus the number of shootings that ocurred within the same cell.

Some level of correlation can be noticed. Specially in some areas of the boroughs of Bronx and Brooklyn, were many incidents occur, the level of investment in construcion is relatively low. On the other hand, the grid cells with the most investment correspond to the grid where less indicent occur. These cells are mostly located in the Manhattan borough. Which again, from our point of view makes sense, since it corresponds to the most wealthy borough in New York City.

To support this, we have located all these areas in a map of New York City, showing in Figure 6. The heat map shows the degree of investment there is in the area, red being the lowest, green being the highest investment areas. Again we can confirm that most areas in the Bronx and Brookling are the most impacted. Also, the heat map visible in Figure 7 is showing year by year (press play to see the change over the years) the amount of incidents. The increase in the shooting incidents from 2019 and 2020 is also visible within the heatmap.

Even though there is correlation between the number of incidents and investment in the Bronx and Brooklyn, there are probably many more factors that take place. Proof of this is the borough of Staten Island, where no significant number of shootings have occurred, but the level of investment is overall low compared to the rest of the city.

Conclussion and further discussion

In conclusion, we can be certain that there is some level of correlation between the shootings and the analyzed factors. However, we acknowledge that it is a very complex topic and affected by a lot of variables. + +Having said that, The City Administration should address the shooting issue with the respective seriousness. This report tries to provide an overview of the current situation and how it affects society as a whole. + +Other things that could have been analyzed as well are the use of public transportation, unemployment, or other social indicators, but couldn't be achieved for technical reasons.
