This is just a running list of differences I noticed between VSCode and SideX's UI. I'm not sure how many of these are intentional vs. bugs, just documenting them for reference.
Overview
VSCode:
Theme: Dark 2026
SideX:
Theme: Dark 2026
- Font size / spacing in Sidex is smaller, and possibly a different font? Seems to only affect the side menus, not the editor.
- Theme colors in Sidex don't match up correctly
- Top menu buttons have different spacing
- The top search bar in VSCode shows the workspace folder name aligned left, whereas Sidex shows "open file - workdir" aligned center (I actually like this change)
Source Control
VSCode:
SideX:
- SideX doesn't seem to be aware that this is a new branch?
File Menu
VSCode:
SideX:
- Several missing menu items
Settings
VSCode
SideX
- Haven't dug too deep into the settings differences. This is just to show that both have the same font settings set.
File System Integration
VSCode:
SideX:
- VSCode correctly picks up the Dolphin file explorer on KDE, whereas SideX defaults to Gnome
Tested on Fedora KDE, with the RPM build from #59
Both have all extensions disabled.
I think this is a really promising project, and these are all pretty minor. The only discrepancies that kind of bothered me are the theme color differences and the font differences.
