If we really want be precise, when using a longlat based spatial reference system (e.g. "'+proj=longlat +datum=WGS84'"), proximity calculations should be done based on the ellipsoid (with radius at the equator > radius at the poles).
Currently, the R-Tree and KD-Tree are based on euclidean proximity.
