Cloud feedbacks? #14

Description

Both the ClimKern and Radiative Feedback Calculations notebooks will require cloud feedbacks to be computed with the CESM2 sample data. This will involve calculating the cloud radiative effect and then proceeding with both the residual and adjustment methods. It appears CESM2 ERF from RFMIP is available on Google Cloud, which should be sufficient for the residual method.

One thing to consider is what to do for the adjustment method since the clear-sky version fluxes from RFMIP are not available on the Pangeo cloud. Some options:

  • Manually download the clear-sky fluxes from ESGF and store them in the repository (they are ~40MB each)
  • Same as above, but see if we can upload them to Jetstream for cloud-based access
  • Do the "quick and dirty" method from Soden et al. (2008) where we simply assume that clouds reduce the forcing by some constant ratio (this seems most appropriate for the global mean but not on a gridbox-by-gridbox basis)
