What & why

Fixes #9505.

ACP chat sessions ignored the agent config they were launched with: only harness reached the chat runtime, so every chat ran on the default account's env, and custom configs that run claude/codex were rejected for chat. Two Claude accounts (separated by CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR per agent config) could run as terminals side by side but not as chats.

Changes:

  • protocol (packages/chat): optional agentConfigId on createSessionInputSchema (additive).
  • chat-runtime: nullable agent_config_id column (0004_session_agent_config, generated with drizzle-kit), stored on the session row and passed in HarnessFactoryOptions. Resume without an explicit id inherits it from the replaced session / latest row for that harness session; fork and rewind copy it.
  • host-service: buildChatAgentEnv layers agentLaunchEnv(config) over the default-account env (same precedence as terminal launches; ambient ANTHROPIC_* keys are still stripped, a key set in the config survives). captureSessionAccount now sees the right config dir. chatLaunchTarget returns the config id and lets custom* configs whose command is claude/codex chat as that preset (local helper; shared resolveAgentLaunchPresetId and terminal launches untouched). sessions.resume reopens on the stored config when it still exists.

Not in this PR: the desktop chat pane's agent picker still identifies agents by preset id, so chats created from the pane UI keep using the default account (resumed ones keep their stored config). Wiring the config id through the renderer is a follow-up: #9507.

Behavior note: a CLI/host chat with --agent claude now resolves the first claude config and applies its env, matching terminal launches.

How I tested it

  • New unit tests: agentEnv.test.ts (default only / config wins incl. own key / deleted config falls back), agents.test.ts (custom claude & codex chat, custom aider doesn't), resumeSession.test.ts (persisted, inherited on harness-only resume, null when absent).
  • bun run lint clean, bun run typecheck 42/42.
  • bun run test: all touched suites pass. Two unrelated failures in the full run: @superset/shared "recurrence timezone math > walks a BYHOUR list that wraps past midnight" (fails identically on unmodified main), and a PullRequestRuntimeManager test that passes 48/48 in isolation (flaky).
  • End-to-end, on a local build of 2.0.6 + this patch (macOS arm64). There were two agent configs, each with its own CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR: a claude-preset config (work account, ~/.claude-a) and a custom-preset config that runs claude (personal account, ~/.claude-b). I made one chat per config with superset sessions create --local --workspace <ws> --agent <config id> --prompt 'Run: echo $CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR and reply with only the output.':
    • Work account chat replied ~/.claude-a. Personal account chat replied ~/.claude-b. Before the patch, the work chat printed the default account's dir, and creating the personal chat failed with "cannot be used with ACP chat".
    • Resume: sessions close then sessions resume on the personal chat. The new session kept the same agentConfigId and harness session id, its ACP process had CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=~/.claude-b, and the same prompt again replied ~/.claude-b.
    • Both chats were also checked side by side in the app with the same outputs; a redacted screenshot is available on request.
    • Not related to this change: the resumed chat came back in "Ask for approval" mode, so its echo needed approval, while the first turn ran without a prompt.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs
  • I have signed the CLA (the bot asks on your first PR)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Chats retain their selected agent configuration when resumed, forked, or rewound, including when multiple chats share an agent session.
    • Supported custom Claude and Codex agents can launch chats with their configured environment and credentials.
    • Session history discovery can use a selected agent configuration.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Chats without a saved configuration continue to use the default environment when reopened.
    • If a saved configuration is deleted or no longer matches the session’s CLI, reopening falls back to the default and displays a notice.
    • Other custom agents remain unavailable as chat launch targets.

A chat opened for a host agent config launched with only the harness, so the
config's env (CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, CODEX_HOME, keys) never reached the agent:
every Claude chat ran on the default account, and a custom agent running the
claude or codex CLI could not chat at all.

- chatLaunchTarget returns the config id and accepts a custom config whose
command is claude/codex; terminal launches are unchanged.
- The chat session stores agent_config_id (chat-runtime migration 0004), and
the harness factory overlays agentLaunchEnv for it, after the ambient-key
strip, as a terminal launch would.
- A resumed, forked or rewound chat keeps its config: createSession inherits
it from the replaced chat or the latest row for that agent session, and
  `sessions resume` reopens on it.

Walkthrough

ACP chat sessions now carry an agent configuration ID through launch, storage, discovery, and session recreation. Matching configurations contribute environment values, and custom Claude or Codex agents can use their corresponding ACP presets.

Changes: ACP chat agent configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session configuration contract and storage
packages/chat/src/protocol/commands.ts, packages/chat-runtime/src/db/drizzle/*, packages/chat-runtime/src/db/schema/schema.ts, packages/chat-runtime/src/journal/epoch/epoch.ts, packages/chat-runtime/src/projection/projection.ts
The create-session and discovery contracts accept an agent configuration ID. The local session table stores the nullable ID, and session initialization writes it when opening or resetting an epoch.
Propagate configuration through chat runtime
packages/chat-runtime/src/commands/commands/commands.ts, packages/chat-runtime/src/projection/projection.ts, packages/chat-runtime/src/sessions/*, packages/chat-runtime/src/router/router/router.ts, packages/chat-runtime/src/commands/commands/*test.ts, packages/chat/src/client/agentSessionClient/agentSessionClient.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/...
Creation records and forwards the resolved configuration. Resume, fork, and rewind can reuse a source chat’s configuration. Live-session reuse checks for a match, and discovery forwards an optional configuration filter. Client and desktop fixtures include a null ID.
Resolve launch targets and build the ACP environment
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/agents/agents.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/agents/agents.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/sessions/create-chat-session.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/sessions/session-service.ts, packages/host-service/src/chat-v3/acpHarnesses.ts, packages/host-service/src/chat-v3/agentEnv.ts, packages/host-service/src/chat-v3/agentEnv.test.ts
Launch targets include the configuration ID. Custom Claude and Codex commands select the corresponding ACP preset. Environment construction overlays a matching configuration environment and applies credential and PATH handling.
Resume sessions with saved configurations
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/sessions/sessions.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/sessions/sessions.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/chat-v3/mount.ts, packages/host-service/src/chat-v3/resumeAfterUpdate.ts, packages/host-service/src/chat-v3/resumeAfterUpdate.test.ts
Host resume reuses a saved configuration when it still matches the session harness. Otherwise, it uses the provider preset and can return a notice about a deleted or incompatible configuration. Update recovery passes the source chat ID and can offer chats that cannot continue.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(host-service): honor agent config env in ACP chat sessions" follows conventional commit format and matches the main change. The PR makes ACP chat launches apply the selected agent config's environment over the default-account environment, and the summary shows this is implemented in host-service (agentEnv.ts, agents.ts, sessions.ts). The title is specific and does not use vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a 'What & why' section that explains the problem, links issue #9505, and lists the changes by package. It has a 'How I tested it' section with unit tests, lint and typecheck results, known unrelated test failures, and end-to-end testing on macOS. The checklist is present and marked. The description states that the renderer agent picker is out of scope and is a follow-up (#9507). The template's screenshot request is not met for this non-visual backend change, but the author gives a redacted screenshot offer, and the template only strongly prefers screenshots for user-visible changes. The description is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #9505 has four coding requirements. The reviewed head (be816e3) implements each one. Diffs were checked against the merge base b77bc04.

  1. Layer the config env over the default-account env. buildChatAgentEnv in packages/host-service/src/chat-v3/agentEnv.ts accepts agentConfigId and presetId. configEnv returns the agentLaunchEnv(config) overlay only when chatLaunchPresetId(config) equals presetId. Ambient keys are removed first. A config's own ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN replaces the base keys, and the overlay is applied last. Covered by agentEnv.test.ts.

  2. Persist the config ID on the chat session. chatSessionsLocal gains nullable agent_config_id (schema.ts, migration 0004_session_agent_config). createSession in commands.ts writes the resolved value through journal.open and passes it to live.create.

  3. Inherit the config ID on resume, fork, and rewind. launchedAgentConfigId returns the explicit ID, or the replaced row's ID, or the row from findByHarnessSession. Fork passes the source config when the target harness equals the source harness. Rewind passes the source config. Resume through sourceSessionId copies the source config through sourceAgentConfig. resumeSession.test.ts covers persisted, inherited, and null cases, and recovery isolation. The diff does not show dedicated fork or rewind tests. Those branches are verified by code only.

  4. Let custom configs running claude or codex chat. chatLaunchPresetId in agents.ts maps a custom* config whose executable is claude or codex to that preset. chatLaunchTarget returns agentConfigId. agents.test.ts covers the claude and codex cases and the aider negative case. Terminal launches still use resolveAgentLaunchPresetId.

The linked issue does not require renderer support. The PR excludes it and names #9507 as the follow-up. Changes since the previous review add stored-config retention (storedChatConfig), resume notices, recovery account checks, and discovery filtering. None removes a requirement above.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed areas support the objectives of #9505, or they are required type, schema, or fixture updates.

  • Env merge and launch target (agentEnv.ts, agents.ts, create-chat-session.ts, acpHarnesses.ts, mount.ts): implement requirements 1 and 4.
  • Persistence and runtime (schema.ts, migration 0004, epoch.ts, projection.ts, registry.ts, liveSession.ts, commands.ts): implement requirements 2 and 3.
  • Resume paths (sessions.ts, session-service.ts, resumeAfterUpdate.ts, mount.ts): reopen a chat on its stored config, or on the default account when that config no longer runs the chat's CLI. The keepsAccount check and the withoutAgentConfig flag keep recovery on the account that started the chat. These support requirement 3.
  • Native history discovery (discoverSessions in commands.ts, router.ts, registry.ts, protocol discoverSessionsInputSchema): reads native history from the account the chat runs under. This extends the account separation in #9505. It is not a separate feature.
  • Protocol and client (packages/chat commands.ts, agentSessionClient.ts, desktop test fixtures): add an optional agentConfigId or set it to null. These changes are additive or fixture updates.
  • Generated migration files and snapshot: migration metadata only.

The desktop chat picker is not changed. This matches the PR description and the issue. The CLI behavior change, where --agent claude resolves the first claude config, follows from chatLaunchTarget and is documented in the PR.

No change was found that is unrelated to #9505. The commit message mentions legacy harness updates. The reviewed diff does not show code for that item, so it is not counted here.

Report missing agent configs before resuming

If a stored config is deleted, runtime resume paths retain its ID but launch without its environment. The chat can then use the default account or fail to resume. Report the missing config instead of silently falling back.

Honor the configured executable for custom chats.

When a custom config specifies an absolute Codex path, the chat launcher ignores it. If Codex is not otherwise on PATH, the chat fails to start. Resolve and probe the configured executable before passing it to the ACP adapter.

Preserve custom arguments in chat launches.

Custom Claude and Codex chats discard config.args. This can ignore a configured permission mode while the Claude harness requests bypassPermissions instead. Honor the configured arguments, or reject chat launches when they cannot be applied.

Reject resume when the saved agent config is missing.

If a stopped chat’s agent config was deleted, resume selects another config without warning. The chat can then run under a different account and fail to find its history. Require an exact config ID match when an ID is stored; retain the preset fallback for older chats without one.

…and recovery

Review follow-ups for the agent-config chat env.

- Resume reuses the stored config only when it still chats as the session's
harness. A config deleted or moved to another CLI falls back to the
default account (not the first config of the preset), and `sessions
  resume` returns a `notice` saying so.
- A config's env applies only to the CLI it runs, so a config edited from
claude to codex no longer lends its env to a Claude chat. A config that
brings its own Anthropic key drops a sandbox sign-in token.
- The legacy claude-code and codex harnesses get the chat's config too.
- Update recovery resumes with the source chat's config (`sourceSessionId`)
instead of the newest chat of that agent session.
- A replaced chat of another agent session no longer passes on its config,
and a live resumed chat is not handed to a pane that asks for another
  config.
- Resetting an event-free session's epoch stores the new config.
- Native history listing (`discoverSessions`) takes `agentConfigId` and
reuses or launches an adapter of that account.
- Tests pin the host run mode, and cover resume fallback, the custom Codex
target, recovery, inheritance, handoff and account-aware listing.

Thanks for the reviews. Addressed in d571d5f:

Fixed

  • Resume with a config that now runs another CLI (cubic P2 on sessions.ts:161, CodeRabbit on sessions.ts:166, agentEnv.ts:61): resume reuses the stored config only when it still chats as the session's harness, and a config's env applies only to the CLI it runs.
  • Resume with a deleted config (CodeRabbit on sessions.ts:163, commands.ts:577): it now falls back to the default account, not the first config of the preset, and sessions resume returns a notice. We chose fallback-with-notice over rejecting, so chats keep working after a user removes a duplicate config; feat(desktop): choose which agent config a chat runs as #9507 shows the same notice in the chat pane.
  • Update recovery picks the source chat's config via sourceSessionId (CodeRabbit commands.ts:528).
  • Epoch reset stores the new config (CodeRabbit epoch.ts:39).
  • discoverSessions takes agentConfigId and reuses/launches an adapter of that account (cubic registry.ts:22).
  • A config's own ANTHROPIC_API_KEY/ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN drops the sandbox sign-in token (CodeRabbit agentEnv.ts:83).
  • Tests: resume fallback and kept config (cubic sessions.ts:158); the env tests pin SUPERSET_HOST_RUN_MODE (cubic agentEnv.test.ts:32, CodeRabbit agentEnv.test.ts:77).

Documented, not changed

  • Chat ignores a config's args and executable path (cubic agents.ts:726, CodeRabbit agents.ts:728, agentEnv.ts:61): a chat takes only the config's env; its permission mode comes from the chat's own mode picker, and the ACP harness resolves the CLI. This is now stated on chatLaunchPresetId. Honouring a custom executable path is a possible follow-up.

Keep the session live during the account-isolation test.

The empty start stream can end before the config-b request. The dead-session check can then make the test pass even without the config-equality reuse guard. Keep the stream open until disposal and assert that the session remains live through the second request.

Preserve the source chat’s default-account selection.

If recovery resumes a default-account chat and a newer chat shares its native session ID, the lookup can select the newer chat’s config. Recovery then launches under that account and sends the saved prompts there. Preserve the source selection even when its config ID is null.

Check the recovered config before handoff.

If two unfinished chats share a terminal and native session ID but use different configs, manual recovery can send the second chat’s prompts to the first chat’s agent and close the second original session. Resolve the config before handoff and keep pending prompts isolated across configs.

Report the account fallback before continuing recovery.

Refresh discovery after a config changes.

If a config’s account changes while its chat remains live, discovery can return the old account’s history. New launches use the updated account. Avoid reusing the live adapter when its launch configuration is stale.

Update the live-session adapter reuse check around session.agentConfigId and
input.agentConfigId to also verify that the session’s launch configuration,
including its account, matches the current configuration. When it is stale,
avoid reusing the adapter so discovery uses the updated account; preserve reuse
for matching configurations.

Honor the selected Claude account in sandbox chats.

When a selected config supplies only CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, the inherited ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN takes precedence. Claude can use the sandbox account instead. Ensure an explicitly selected account overrides sandbox credentials and routing while preserving the default sandbox sign-in.

precedence over inherited sandbox credentials and routing, including
`ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN` when no overlay key or token is set. Preserve the
existing sandbox sign-in behavior when no account is explicitly selected.

Second round of review follow-ups.

- A fallback to the default account passes an explicit `agentConfigId:
null` (runtime command only, not the public protocol), so the new chat
inherits no config from another chat on the same agent session.
- Update recovery of a chat that ran on the default account keeps it
there, instead of taking a newer chat's config.
- Recovery prompts stay with the account they were queued under: a pane
that starts under another config gets neither the recovering chat nor
  its prompts.
- Update recovery no longer continues a chat whose config was deleted or
moved to another CLI on the default account; the chat is offered to
resume instead. `storedChatConfig` is shared with `sessions resume`.

Thanks, second round addressed in be816e3 (also merged into #9507):

Fixed

  • Fallback to the default account inheriting another chat's config (session-service.ts:113): the fallback now passes an explicit agentConfigId: null on the runtime command (not the public protocol), so nothing is inherited from other chats on the same agent session.
  • Recovery of a default-account chat (commands.ts:444): a source chat on the default account passes null too, so a newer chat's config is not taken.
  • Recovery prompts across configs (commands.ts:469, commands.ts:553): a pane that starts under another config gets neither the recovering chat nor its pending prompts.
  • Update recovery after the config was deleted or moved to another CLI (commands.ts:642): the chat is no longer continued on the default account; it is offered to resume instead, so the user decides. The check (storedChatConfig) is shared with sessions resume.

Each fix has a regression test that fails without it.

Not changed

  • Discovery reusing a live adapter after the config's account changed (registry.ts:108): the window is a chat that stays live while its config is edited; the next launch picks up the new account. Happy to compare launch env on reuse if you'd prefer.
  • Cloud sandbox sign-in vs a config that only sets CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR (agentEnv.ts:79): dropping the sandbox token there would sign a sandbox chat out unless the account dir holds its own login, which sandboxes don't have today. A config that brings its own key already drops the sandbox token. Follow-up once sandbox account dirs are a thing.

Keep chats with missing session rows paused.

If a marker chat has no session row, recovery can launch it on the default account or another chat’s config and send its queued prompts. Keep the chat paused and offer it for resume instead. The offer flow must also retain entries whose session rows are missing.
