The layout isn’t too helpful as the capital letter detaches the first line from the rest of the poem.

Changes to the drop capital in this particular case are not trivial -- if the current form of the drop capital is not fit for purpose, I would prefer to not render a drop capital at all than try to make it work differently;

the second question I think needs discussion: if the poem is in couplets, it needs to be encoded differently (currently we have two stanzas), but even looking at it more carefully now, I think it's a sonnet (so three quatrains + couplet), even though visually you have a 12 line stanza + a couplet (as sometimes English sonnets appeared in the early modern print). Whether every other line should be indented is, I think, a different question, since it seems to me that it has no connection with the poem structure.
