# Dream
22

3+
**Local-first, sleep-cycle memory for AI agents.** Dream gives an assistant a memory that runs entirely on your machine. It captures what each session learned, and every night a local "dream cycle" replays the day, merges what matters, forgets the noise, and rebuilds a short index for the next session. No cloud, no raw transcripts leaving the box.
4+
5+
> Research project, not a product. It explores one specific combination, fully local plus offline batch consolidation plus active forgetting, that mainstream agent-memory tools do not put together.
6+
7+
### The loop
8+
9+
```
10+
capture: session ends ──> buffer (today.jsonl)
11+
|
12+
v nightly 02:05
13+
consolidate: multi-agent debate (local LLM) ──> temporal graph + topic tree + short index
14+
|
15+
v
16+
recall: session starts <── reasoning retrieval
17+
```
18+
19+
### Try it in one command
20+
21+
```bash
22+
pip install -r requirements.txt
23+
python examples/quickstart.py # full stack (bge-m3 + gemma4:12b class)
24+
DREAM_PROFILE=lite python examples/quickstart.py # ~6 GB class, one small model
25+
```
26+
27+
The quickstart runs end to end in a throwaway directory and needs no LLM server (retrieval falls back from reasoning to embedding without Ollama). See [`examples/`](examples/).
28+
29+
### How it differs from mem0 / Letta / Zep
30+
31+
These are excellent tools. Dream simply sits in a different corner of the design space: they ingest memories online and mostly keep everything, while Dream consolidates offline like sleep and deliberately forgets.
32+
33+
| | Dream | mem0 | Letta | Zep |
34+
|---|---|---|---|---|
35+
| Runs fully local | local only, by design (Ollama) | OSS self-host or hosted | OSS or hosted | hosted (Graphiti OSS) |
36+
| When memory is written | nightly batch (dream cycle) | online | online, self-edited | online (episodes) |
37+
| Forgetting | active vitality decay + cold archive | keeps salient facts | context paging | non-lossy, never discards |
38+
| Temporal graph | yes (simple) | optional | no | yes (bi-temporal) |
39+
| Maturity | research project | ~48k stars, ECAI 2025 paper | ex-MemGPT runtime | LongMemEval SOTA, arXiv |
40+
41+
This is not a benchmark claim: [Zep](https://github.com/getzep/graphiti) leads temporal-reasoning benchmarks and [mem0](https://github.com/mem0ai/mem0) leads adoption. Dream is a research exploration of the local plus sleep-cycle plus forgetting angle, closest in spirit to [Letta](https://github.com/letta-ai/letta)'s biological framing. If you need a production memory service today, use one of them.
