June 2024 - Tesla still leads in the UK

June’s auto market saw plugin EVs take 28.2% share in the UK, up from 25.1% year on year. BEVs grew volume modestly, while PHEVs grew more strongly. Overall auto volume was 179,263 units, up 1% YoY and well below pre-2020 seasonal norms (~225,000). The UK’s leading battery-electric vehicle brand in June was Tesla.

Surprisingly, Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis recently said something I agree with. He said that governments, instead of giving money to buy electric cars, should focus on improving the charging infrastructure.

The logic is that, with more and faster public electric car chargers, automakers will be able to sell electric cars with smaller batteries, which will make them more affordable and efficient.

In my opinion, it's crazy to have electric cars carrying huge half-ton batteries all the time. We need more public chargers, but also electric cars that can be charged at higher C-rates.

With upcoming module-less and cobalt-free batteries not only approaching a energy density of 200 Wh/kg, but also supporting 6 C, it means a full charge in 10 minutes, or half (from 20 to 70 %) in just 5 minutes.

I agree with this , denser infrastructure certainly allows for more modest battery sizes, and is a good way to go!
