Shell script not working (bongo cat widget)

Hi,
I was trying to make a bongo cat widget but i cant get the script to work in the waybar image widget. Here is what i have:

 "image": {
    "exec": "~/.config/waybar/assets/bongocat.sh",
    "size": 32,
    "interval": 2
} 

The bongocat.sh script returns either

/home/$USER/.config/waybar/assets/bongocat1.png
or
/home/$USER/.config/waybar/assets/bongocat2.png
after every keypress

Also weirdly whenever i am using the script waybar doesn't show up but hyprland still adjusts the window sizes
